I have a xb2003 with a merc 2.5 245hp witha sportmaster lower unit with 1.62 gears. I am turning a 26 trophy 4 blade at only 6000 rpms. my speed is around 87. do i need to downsize my prop pitch or have a 1.75 or1.87 gear put in my lower unit?

Go with the 1.87 in a 2.5 as it will give you the best selection of props that will keep your motor in it's powerband.
Depending on how you set your boat up, your trophy and a 1.87, youshould be able to at least buzz it up between 7000-7500.

I agree. Go with the 1.86, it will let you chose from a wider selection of props. A 28" or 30" chopper or ET will get you into the high 90's or with a good set up, 100+ .

I ran 1.75 gears on my 03 225pm for a long time. A 25 trophy at 6850 gave me 91 gps. The trophys have more pitch than they read. Try a smaller one, maybe a 24 before going to the expense of a gear swap. The blades are flatter and in my opinion handle better and have less torque. Bob

It would sure be cheeper to try a 23 Trophy. Maybe you can borrow one. If your setup is good you could be at around 95 mph at 7500. Plus you wouldn't be lugging your motor.
