So sorry to hear about this accident, my condolences to you & your family WTSJ. :(

I well remember the orange/white 18R Jack redid several years ago. I've had a 76 18R in storage for over a decade now & I've hesitated to say what I'd put on it as I realize it was designed back when v6s were still in development & inlines ruled the day. A modern 2.5 variant seems to work on the old 20ftrs but between the technology gap of the 1970s Allisons & todays power capabilities and of course this incident, it sure causes hesitation for me on the 18 with much power north of 150ish.

I had a ported 2.5 on a Speedcraft (ally splash) 16 ft.. It drove like a dream but after about 80 mph which happens quickly, you'd have to watch the bow and begin and effort to flatten the boat out.. I can certainly see where wind and/or a sneaky roller could suddenly get such a rig to a point of no return..

Friend of mine has restored a 15R and has it rigged with a 12" / 245.
It runs absolutely mint but......
He runs 35lbs of ballast in the nose for just that reason.
