    1974 15' Allison

Sorry, misprint, 14' Allison not 15'! Here's a superlight boat I owned briefly in 1981, raced/won with it twice in 1982 in APBA then sold it. The boat was owned/raced in NOA by Bunny Goldston, George Laycock remembers the day it arrived new in Wilmington, N.C. Last fall my son Hans and I became...

Prop ideas for 16' Ally with V4 140

PS In the APBA tri-hull class they run full diameter Mercury V-6 choppers on the 1980 era OMC V-4s. Try 26" pitch.

Prop ideas for 16' Ally with V4 140

!978-1980 we ran the OMC 12 1/2x25 cleaver on the 1977 16' race boat/Evinrude 140, geared 2:1. Ran 73 mph set up for closed course.

    V-4 omc on 13r

10"pad is way too wide. The boats were rated at ridiculously low hp for insurance porpuses only, to try to avoid lawsuits. The 14' Allison raceboat was rated for 25hp, was built to run 75 hp.

    V-4 omc on 13r

I bought the red/white boat (the one at Acie's shop) new in 1981, raced it, sold it to John and bought another 13' in 1982. I'd widened the pad to 8" with Bondo, which was too much, the tail did not plane high enough. A 7" pad on that boat is optimal (same width as the 14' boat's pad). The 13'...

    V-4 omc on 13r

It's the weight, not the hp that's the problem. To run the heavier (than OMC 75) shortshaft Mercury 85 in GP class Paul had to make a bottom modification with Bondo to get the tail up. The V-4 with its 20" downhousing would be a handling nightmare because of both weight and height. Far more...

    Ep-15

The boat sold for $2000 new in 1980. Darris said that the material alone would cost $10000 today, nearly as much as for a 20' boat. So, unfortunately, the EP-15 will likely remain a fast running antique.

    EP-15 update

When I first set up the 1983 Johnson 35 on the boat (19" transom height) it ran 36 mph with an aluminum 10x13 Solas prop, 37 mph with a stock Stiletto 10x14 stainless prop (the later measures the same as the Solas and OMC 10x13 props, when using a Rundquist pitch gauge). After an enormous amount...

    V-4 omc on 13r

Top speed of a V-4 in JP class (15-16' Allison) was 73mph. The 13' would not run much faster and would be a nightmare to handle with the cow on the back. To get into the upper 70s with a V-4 you'd need the racing model with the racing gearcase. On a 15'16' Allison. The later (ca. 1978) 16' model...

    V-4 omc on 13r

Unsuited. Not safe, won't handle (the 85 Mercury is already too heavy), won't be much faster than a good 3 cyl. looper, which is ideal. For the heavy V-4 you need a 15' or 16' boat. A good 1975 75 with milled head (.080") and the right prop (made by me) will break 71 mph on a 13' if the pad's...

Here's Joe McCauley. I haven't seen Pedro since he repaired my lightweight gray 13' in 1985 (Rocks Pond ...). Jay, I'm told, lives near Paul and Lucille in Friendsville. I'm in Austria til next August. Email is jmccauley@uh.edu Best, Joe Boat shown in pictures: 1980 EP-15, 41.5mph...

    Ep-15

Yeah, but it wouldn't turn a 14" prop 6500 RPM and run 41+ mph! I love the old outboards (old =<1995).

    Ep-15

John's yanking chains again, I let him drive the EP-15 and he went nuts, thought he was going 50 mph (was only 37 mph with carb 3/4 open ...). John, have a nice cup of coffee!

    Ep-15

The photo of Paul and me is from Sept., 2008. I hadn't seen him in 21 years, but called him on his big birthday, also posted a writeup about him on an amazon.com race boat book review. He was sweaty, hadd been out digging a retaining wall for a catfish pond. I knew him (as teenager) nearly from...

    Ep-15

It's the only one. I set the EP record at 70.560 mph with the mother racing model XR-14 using a 15" offset, if I recall correctly. Boat could have run 80mph with bullet above the water but underwater water pickup was illegal in stock classes.

    Ep-15

At some point in the future I may be forced to sell, have a sporty German wife and live 2/3 of the year in Austria. The boat was under a sort of car port for 20 years, never sat in the rain, and the bottom's firm. But I'd hate to have to sell it. It's very safe if the prop's not right and speed...

    Ep-15

The sponson design prevented the XR-15 from turning well in closed course, there's a better sponson design for that. I appreciate all the comments, as I said it's the most fun of any boat I ever owned, and I've owned a lot.
