What is the physical difference between these two engines? Can a 300XS be de-tuned to become legal for fishing tournaments that have maximum horsepower of 250hp?

0.2L :LMAO:

Most TD's go by the serial number. I'm sure you could have Simon rewrite the ECU to make less power (I'm sure his jaw would hit the floor at that request), but the serial number would still correlate with a 300.

Probably better off to trade with someone with a 250 if that's what you want......I'm sure you can find someone with a 250 that wants to go bigger that would swap! :at the bar

Your saying for fishing in your club the max hp is 250?
You can detune many ways but not fishing legal.

I am not in a fishing club but do know that prospective purchasers of my boat cannot have over 250 hp. Just a query. Not looking to pull the wool over anybodies eyes.

A 300xs is about $3K more than a 250xs, IIRC. Surely you can find somebody with a 250 that will swap you out, if that's what you think is holding back the sale of your boat............

In my opinion, the biggest detractor to the 300 is that it requires 91 octane and the 250 runs on 87.

Not all 250's run on 87 I have the 2005 XS and its a premium 91 minimum motor. I believe this was the only one or maybe the 04' was too?? The 05' XS has the 6300 rev limiter vs the 5800 of the previous years. Got lucky with mine as I didnt know until after I bought it that the 05's were supposdely the strongest of the 250 XS series. Don at European Marine said these would dyno 275 to 280 PS HP. I actually was thinking of switching to a 300 XS and Don talked me out of it with the previous comments. I couldnt justify 10K for just 20 to 30 hp increase.

Ive heard the main difference with the 300 is that they do some hand blending in the block and compression increase. Of course the obvious displacement and ECU difference.

Youre right. I forgot about the first couple years of the 250xs...those did have a lower rev limiter and require higher octane. The newer ones only require 87 though.
