ive got a 305 hp early 04 been one of the best trucks we have ever owned auto had it since 06
fuel mileage was great till I had to change injectors because of this junk fuel
used to be able to do a 5 hr trip with a 36 ft camper on a half tank
my 06 duramax with same load same trip was a full tank 75-80 both trucks

always had a chip on it wife used to get 500-550 miles to a tank in town driving the est. milage gauge always shows around 20 unless its loaded heavy
before the injector change it was 22+ just the truck seen loaded runs where it stayed around 15-16

Thanks, I havent ruled out the 04 to 06 duramax with the allison tranny. I am a Cummins man at heart, drove one at work for many years plowing snow, it was abused to say the least. Never failed and pushed mountains of snow, got decent mpg to boot.

I have an 05 six speed manual with 310,000. This version gets 19-20 even 21 on a 55 mph two lane. Interstate speeds 74ish about 18. I have a 3.73 rear end and it acually turns more rpms than the automatic--2250 (too high) on interstate. 354's would be the deal. This rpm after going to taller tires to compensate.

I don't think pulling an Allison even effects fuel #s. W/ pick-up camper and Allison on interstate about 14, 17-18 on two lane.

The Cummins, Powerstroke, Duramax guys go round and round. Only one is rated by federal government as 'heavy duty'. As you know, the government is always right.

IMO the Holy Grail(s) of Cummins would be the last of the 12 valves (97?) and the last of the non-particulate filter (early, early 2007?)

BTW, computer on board is not accurate on mileage. Figure the old fashioned way.

I have an 04.5 Cummins. 4x4, auto, 5" straight pipe with FTE resonator and 285/75/17s. Everything else is stock.

Most of my drivings 20 miles round trip and avg. 100 miles per week pulling xb2003. I avg 14.5-16 depending if I take hilly route.

Without pulling boat 17-18mpg.

That's driving like a GPA to. Accellerating slowly, keeping rpms below 2k, and coasting to a stop.

Agreed on the p-pump 12v.. Anyway, mine in an untouched 2001.5 24v, 6 spd, 2wd, 3.54 axle, Michelin hiway tires.. I get about 18 in town and 24 hwy.. If you drive like most guys you see now where they get in the boost everytime they accelerate, they'll suck $4 fuel in a hurry.. I drive pretty easy, light throttle input, shift out around 1800rpm.. Maybe twice a week I'll spin it up full throttle to 2600-2700 rpm for 3rd and 4th gear but otherwise Im a pretty tame driver.. My dad had a 2003 2wd cummins with auto with no aftermarket tune all factory stock.. I drove from 550 mile one way to buy a single axle xb2002 rigged.. Going 66-68 mph on the way I got 24.3 mpg , with the boat on return trip going 60-62mph I got 21+... All hand calculated..

Bought a gem 2004.5. A few nice mods. HTT 62/65/13ss , spearco intercooler, 90hp injectors, dragon slayer CP3, airdog and a full billet Garmon built tranny. It's a torque monster, love it!
