It's like beating a dead horse, but how many 03's are out there with the new 3L mercs. How do they handle? I would do it right now, if safety wasn't my concern. Hard to justify a new XB21 when it is used 3 weeks out of the year. My 260 will be in the for sale section of the forum today if I can get good pics. Possibly the boat too. Would much rather spend money on a new motor than $50k+ on a new one.

I've got a 03 with a 250 3 liter to me it seems to ride better than my other 03 that had a 2.5 but with the 3 liter it does very low in the back and will back wash very easily I wasn't going to get a 3 liter but I such a great deal on the boat I jumped on it

That is a lot of set back when you add the weight. I know it is expensive to start changing stuff around but a 6" plate, stuffed, would probably let the back of the boat ride higher. That 14" is a ton of leverage with 120 pounds more motor. You should be getting more stern lift with the 3 liter lower unit too. If it is working for you and you like it I would probably put gas in it and ride!

I'm going to make the call today to order a 250 Sport XS. Has anyone converted a non ratcheting gear case to a ratcheting gear case?

I don't think you can convert a 3.0 liter case to non ratcheting. I believe you would have to convert to a 2.5 liter case. As many OMCs that have been run of Ally's with no problems I ain't sure it would be worth it.

That does make sense I've been out of the Allison world for a while I had a 03 back in 94 to 98 with a 260 2.5 and I slept to meny times sense then so I got this one I have now back in July and theirs a big difference in the motors I guess I'm going to need some educating on all the new stuff and all the new stuff is old stuff to everyone else lol

I saw this post on Scream and Fly, but I didn't know if anyone on the Allison forum had done this mod. K-dawg or Captinkirk which lower unit are you running?

From what I understood on the Mercury website was that the Sport XS had solid mounts and sport master gear case

My 225 Pro XS has solid mounts and I am running a 3.0 sportmaster with 1.62 gears. The lower has had all the mods done to it by Robbie Patterson from Sanderson Marine and Propeller. My boat does not idle at 4 miles per hour. Maybe something is wrong with yours.

I wouldn't give up and jump to a 2.5 just yet over the idle speed if you are overall pleased with the motor in every other way. Most 2.5's I've been around idled considerably faster than 610 rpms.

My 250XS idles at 580 RPMs, but it is on a heavier boat. I think that's about 2.5-3 mph IIRC. If you've got an eco-monitor, you can use Troll Control to drop that down a little slower - 500 or 550 RPMs as best as I can recall.

Ended up get an 06 Pro XS 225 with a sporty. I figured that a 225 should be just fine on the XB 03. The 260 is officially for sale I just have to get pics up on the web.
