I am in Texas, looking for an SS older is fine (early 90's). Will travel 2 days for the right ride. I will hang a 91 260 on it so I would like rigged for a merc but not essential.

Probably, but not in the "early 90's". As Erik said, they didn't make the first SS until 1998.

There were comp's, excel's, and a very few drag models but not till 98.

Any comments or knowledge of the degree of hook in the pad of the SSs over the years and what tends to preform the best?

Its not really a "hook" but a lip. I think the lip on the SS's has stayed about the same over the years. I can't believe I'm about to say this but from what I've read and experienced the factory lip on the SS needs to come down some if your running decent power. I'll let the guy's that own them tell you how much. My lip on my brothers SS runs a little over .050".
