Had a brand new trophy sling an ear this weekend. What makes that happen? Just a defect in the prop, or is something I could have done to weaken it?

If that prop was new I'd send it back.
You don't hear of many Trophy props slinging an ear.
Most of the time when a prop does sling one it's from running them real high or they were weak to start with.
Normaly a cast prop vs a welded prop is less likely to come apart.

I lost one as well about two weeks ago. Prop shop said it was the third Trophy in the last month. He claims it was a bad casting. Mine was 2 years old but if less than a year old I would think Mercury would stand behind it.

I got in touch with the guy I bought it from. (Racecar100) at fastbass. He had me a new one shipped out in about 3 days. Good guy to deal with.

Bassracer, I would say unlikely. Mine was a one time deal and no problem since. May have been just a bad prop. Everybody tried to say it was because of engine height. If you are that low it probably want matter

several have slung em' when run high

The reason I waz told is that a box stock trophy will more than not, have one or more blades out of whack, either pitch or rake. that would stress the blade that is out of balance, causing it to weaken more than the others. I've seen stock new trophy's with more than an inch difference in pitch between the next blade. When run high and slapping tha' water like it would, a prop takes on a lot of stress.

The only one I had was about 80 mph. It started vibrating real bad and a loss of speed. Just don't panic and jump out of the gas to quick.

I have seen several cavatation plates with a big chunk knocked out from the blade going straight up. Mine missed the plate but went high enough that it was several seconds later when it made splashdown.

Can you give me some pointers on how to measure the blades, etc to see how much off they are between them, etc????

Like Vcrash mentioned

any prop shop could check it on a pitch gauge. Be forewarned tho, know yer prop guy , or watch him if ya don;t know him, that might be a quick way for him to make a quick buck off you.

A bunch of people have run the heck outta trophys in stock form with out any problems.

I was not trying to sway you to think you HAD to have it checked out.
Myself, I would, but then I have a local prop guy that would check it out for me fer a beer,,or two...LOL !

I'm not sure because it was told to me second hand.
But I have heard the Trophy props have a progressive pitch!!!!!
This would account for the difference in blades.
But not for the slinging of one.

Ran my A45 26 Trophy for 6 years with no problems. Heck, I still have it. It's a 9.8 on the S&F scale.

I had it blueprinted in 1997 about six months into run time on the prop. Here are the numbers before work was done.

It was:

31.5 27 24.5
31.5 27 24.9
31.5 27.5 25
32 28 25

The first number is the Cup, the next number is the trailing edge pitch, and
the last number is the leading edge pitch.

Those numbers do look progresive.

Can anyone jump in here and say for sure if it's fact or fiction ?
I was told once that is why most Trophys run bigger numbers than there pitch would suggest.
Not so much for the cup as for the biggest pitced blade being bigger than what the prop is stamped as.

When you get a boat, the first think you do is put a chit happens sticker on it. I have actually seen just about every popular name wheel through a blade.

Slinging trophy blades

Since February of this year I have slung three blades - all Trophy Plus 27's.

I'm old hat at it and can swap one on the water in less than 10 minutes :?

I think that my issue has been boat weight  Maybe?? I don't know - they might just be making S&#%!!$ props! I do fish a full tournament load, plus some, so I'm migrating to a Hydromotive 26 for tournaments. I'll keep the Trophy for when I'm alone and want to run in the 90's.

I don't think it's the weight. My brother dual consol rocket weighs about 1275 and he carries aloat of tackle tools spare prop ect and has been running a 26 trophy plus with a 225 pro-max for about a year no problems. They might have had a batch of bad prop's?
