You already have the best motor mercury has ever made for that boat. I would rebuild what you have and keep on trucking

You said you like long high speed runs. 280's are costly for that kind of use. 300xs with a 32 and you can cruise fast run fast and get killer mpg's. And these 300xs's don't seem to care about weight like the 2.5's!! After 20+ years of 2.5's I really like the 300xs.

I would love to try the 300R on the GS. but I think it needs a 15" mid. The gearcase on that thing is huge and needs to be run high. So I vote you try the 300R and let me know how it works.

I spent a bundle ungrading and keeping a 2.5 200 running....

Used 250xs has been rock solid by comparison... strange as it seems the 2.5 that was suppsed to be Bullet proof was always needs water pumps, gearcase seals, ecu repairs and drivers, voltage regulators plugs, and more...

That's what I think also. It already 4" taller than a 300XS and now your going to run the gearcase higher (I read they are running about a 1" higher with a bigger diameter prop). I believe the COG is way up there without a 15 or 16" mid. I'm probably going to rebuild the 280 and run it for 3 more years then go to a 300R which by then they'll be a 15 or 16" mid option done by somebody.
