Gents, I just bought a Hydromotive X OT. 28. It is the best prop I have ever bolted on in 14 years. It drives so easy. I have some RPM concerns. It seems a little tall maybe for a tournament load. Yesterday I ran it up to about 88 at 6800 or so. So here is my question, Will it hurt the 280 to run it a little tall or does it need to go down the lake at 7000 rpm's at 85 mph. The 28 will be great for economy and 80 mph cruising. I'm very happy with a 90 mph bass rig. I'm concerned about screaming the life out of the 280 with a 26. Can I drive the 280 at 6000 to 6500 all day long and not hurt the motor or do I need to be at 6500 to 7000 and run it to the rev limiter now and then??? Thanks again for all your great help

If you are talking about wot with a load turning 6000-6500 there is no way I would do that!
260 280 300 are made to rev not to lug them. IMO I would set it up to turn mid 7000 @ wot, and you can run it anywhere in between with that set up.. If you put a big strain on these style motors IMO you raise the chance of scattering one. The ports in these motors are designed to rev. I would guess a 280 turning 6000 rpms @ wot is making maybe 220 hp..
Go to a 26p. I have done some research with some of the bigger pitch props and mpg! The bigger props the gas mileage goes down. Cruising with them there is to much slip, and your not burning the fuel you are using!!
I hope it helps.

I've put hundreds of hours on a 260 and a 280. Many, many hours at 4000-6000 rpm cruising. You aren't hurting it there. But all the props I use I can turn more than 7500 loaded. My boat gets around 4.5 mpg running 4500-5500 with the 28 labbed Pro Et. The motor is a 280 with 260 electronics which is probably not as efficient as the 280 electronics.
