It will depend alot on your weight. I had a 7" plate on mine at first, but I am a lot bigger than the guy I bought it from, and the boat was not responsive to trim. I am now running a 10" plate and all is good.

I have the same setup, 280 on a 20" bass mid w/ a sporty. I think 9-10" would be a good range for most folks for boating & fishing. I didnt notice any holeshot issues when I switched, so my guess is for racing, you could measure the difference in the .01-.001 range on the strip.

15" 280 I use 10" set back.
For 20" 280 bass mid use 12" set back to be equal.

I have installed a 10" cmc about 1/2 " below the top of the transome, the motor will only go up to about 1/2 below the pad. I guess its time to raise the Jackplate up on the transome to about 1/2 above the top of the transome. So i should be able to raise and lower the motor 1/2" above and 1/2 below the pad.

I ran 9" and ran my best speed so far with a 15" mid.. I'm now 11" and have some work to do.... Boat is in storage. 10-12 should be great all around. Not sure about a lower hp setup, but "might" run better with more setback. You can run a littler higher on the pad with a sporty.

Not new info here, but anywhere from 9"-12" is a pretty good bet... I have a factory 9.5" on a comp hull/ 225pm and it runs fine, but I'd like to space it out to 11+ and an ET style prop just to see... I also run unloaded with the exception of full fuel...

A chopper cut ET prop is hard to beat on a 2002. My fastest prop so far.

i think you have the right idea.....make that change, and it should work real well for you

Jmo, if you ran 14" and 8" at the same height, thats the reason it didn't handle good at 14" and the reason it wasn't faster. Should've been at least 1/2" difference in height. Jmo
