the 150 and 175 proxs engines make enough torque to spin a 1.75 gear. If it were me and I were trying to maximize efficiency and as most ally owners make as much mph as possible I'd run a 1.75 gear. the bottom end loss isn't as noticeable as the mid range punch and the added top end because of rev limiter issues.
I would think if your primary purpose is for towing the 1.86 gears would be more suited than the 1.75's. 2.0's would be even better.

2.0's is what I have on my Yammie and can still run in the 80's no problem. The 1.86's would be a nice compromise IMO.

So end of season deals are starting to show up. Is it good to say that a 175 proxs with lwp will pull a skier, wakeboarder and do 80mph with a good 4 blade hydromotive without a prop change? Or do I go with a 3.0 l?

I can't help you on the towing ski's or wake boards but I'm going on a limb saying you would need to prop down for that with the 175. I would talk to Harrell's on the 3.0L front. He's been running one for several years on a grand sport and it runs great. Can't wait to see it next year with his new 250.

How heavy a skiier? 170 lb or less, probably yes. 200+, probably not.

Buy the 175XS and if doesn't meet your needs, sell it to me. I'm not keeping the Promax forever.

My dad is running a 175 ficht motor on his xb2003....he loves it. It does great on gas, has awesome take off and is really smooth. He runs a 29pitch four blade prop and runs in the 70's when its all out, but you could ski behind it with that prop. we have a lot of motors to choose from, from stock to fully modified but he no longer cares about top speed so he chooses to run this motor. Its the most functional for normal boating

Ski on two, with a 29. Seems possible. Deep water slalom? I doubt it. I am 210 lbs and 24 is as high I as I prefer think is practical. I know the dfi are supposed to have more bottom end but 5 pitch seems hard to imagine.

Most new world class outboard ski / Barefoot boats run Verados or E-techs if that means anything.:big grin The ski racers run E-techs and Mercs for top speed with raised limiters and some with twin 300,s on 20fters.

I've had 2 xb2003s with 200xs (2001 & 2002) on them - great combo if you can find a clean one.

Low-Mid 80s with 2 people in a tournament, mid-upper 80s with lighter fishing load and 1 person.

Just get a 2.6L HPDI and yank all you want ;-)

Whipper, you are right about the ETEC's, however, they are running the 3.4L ETEC's. They have displacement to spare! LOL

Mostly wakeboarding and tubing with kids. My slalom days are over. A 200xs or 2.5xs would be awsome but are really hard to find. Easiest would be the 175 proxs just bolt on and go. Lot of extra setup work to go to a 3.0l. A 175 HPDI would work but are a fortune to buy new up here website shows $19k and used are hard to come by.

I have always wanted to try the 2.5xs on an XB2002. There was one for sale not too long ago on Fastbass. I got furloughed and that idea went out the window.

I dont think the 200xs would be a very good ski tube engine. Your promax will walk on them. I raced a guy a few weeks ago with a new 200xs on the back of a 19ft cougar he was running a 24 trophy and I left him in the dust with a 28 drag3. He was a boat length back in 3 sec and when I stopped to wait for him he was way back. We talked about his motor and he said he likes the fuel economy but it was way slower than the 2.4 he traded for it. Hes owned the boat for 10 years.
For 10-12 you can find a nice 250xs and be done with it. The Yamahas and E-techs are hard to find also. There is sweet 2.6 stage3 still for sale but not sure with all that power the economy would be there. The 200 V4 verado looks nice also but pricy again. Youll have to go state side for a better deal I think. They rip us off to much up hear!

19K for a 175 Vmax HPDI!!!??? All the ones I have seen here are around 11K for a brand new one. Must be the Canada deal. wow

19K You can get a new SHO for that. As far as the Inline 4 Verado, they are still heavy (the 510 lbs doesn't include the clamp/set-back bracket and the DTS). Neat motor, but I think better off on the XB21's.

Try asking Allison Canada

They've got a 2007 GS with a 175 Opti on consignment sale. This motor has a sporty now, but is not an XS.

They also have a 2013 with a 175XS.

Yeah, I sent them an email a few weeks ago asking how it ran with the 175, guy had no clue what he was talking about! No help at all. Definitely not a performance knowledgeable salesman.

When they first got the white GS/175, they used to drive near one of my friend's cottage, washing the gunnels.

I thought I'd give them a phone call. Whoever I spoke with at the Boat show a few years ago was pretty helpful.

ps -- The 175 Pro XS has significant increases in torque vs the standard 150 and 175 OptiMax engines, that, combined with its enhanced horsepower, gives it great holeshot and significant top speed increases -- that's why it costs more and also why it is indeed a "PRO XS"! But the great news is that also has excellent fuel economy, in fact, better fuel economy than a standard 175 OptiMax!

Reynolds Racing Marine has a GS/175XS for sale. Ally skid planer, 4 blade over hub prop, sportmaster. They put some effort into it.

Per Reynolds, WITH A SPORTSMASTER 1.87 WITH A 30 ET RUNS 83-84 WITH A STOCK GEARCASE AND A 27 FURY RUNS 76-77. NOT SURE ON A SKI SET UP.
MAYBE A 24-25 FURY.
