You have my attention Neal. I was thinking along those lines, but some pointers will save me a lot of wasted time... Our water temps have dropped. The creeks are 66* and river temps are low 70s. The shad are everywhere, and the bite is on. White bass ae running, and the striper too. I'm going to try this for crappie too with Some small road runners.
That doesnt take as much skill.... The large mouth are a little tougher here...

I was throwing a 3 arm rig with swimming 3" shad. No jigs, just hooks. I was thinking about less weight I could retrieve it slower...... It wasn't great, the shad had to be perfect to get them to swim perfect.. A lot easy with jigs.
Any advice is appreciated....

Look at the buckeye lures su-spin. That's what I put on the center wire.

On the other 4 arms, I used true south bullet nose heads.

My shallow rig had a 1/4 oz su-spin and 1/8 oz jig heads on all other wires.

To fish deeper, I went up to 3/8 oz on the su-spin and 1/4 oz on the other wires. That one will hit 12'-15' FAST. Better burn that reel if you throw it shallower than that.

I didn't fish it slow. Just counted it down then swam it back at a medium retrieve.

Here's the jak's baits that I've been throwing. I just bought a 100 pack.

Their darter heads are good too.

Another thing........I've had a good fish or two pull off of an AL rig by bending the snap swivels out. I upgraded to heavier snap swivels on mine. Then recently found the YUM rigs.......they come with a heavier snap, plus a rattle in the head.

I threw an Alabama rig for the first time last week. I just used medium size hooks with white grubs on each outrigger. The striped bass hit it alot, but for some reason, I had a hard time getting the hook set. It's like they were coming at it from the front and hitting the wires.

I fished one yesterday with no luck..... Our water temps have fallen fast in the rivers, and creeks. 41-44*. I fished the drop shot some too. I'm trying to Make my myself more versatile. I need to run to the dam this time of year, but didn't have time.. It is an hour drive. They are tearing up the sauger, stripers, and smallies.

1/2 way between the Gay Bay and LA.
I used to leave everything but what what I wanted to concentrate on at home. To easy to fall back when the bite is off. Also not good to try to learn a bait/technique if they aren't on it. Most baits are seasonal. I wouldn't go to the lake with only a Zara Spook tied on in the middle of winter. But I always have one in the boat!
